14K vs 18K Gold: Which Should You Choose?
18K holds 28.6% more gold per gram. 14K survives daily wear better. Here is how to decide which matters more.

The core difference
14K gold is 14 parts gold in 24, or 58.33% gold by weight, stamped 585. 18K gold is 18 parts in 24, or 75% gold, stamped 750. The remaining fraction in each is alloy - typically copper and zinc for yellow gold, copper for rose, and nickel or palladium plus rhodium plating for white. The gold content difference is 28.6%: 18K contains 28.6% more gold per gram than 14K. That single number drives almost every other difference between them - price, colour saturation, softness, and resale. It also means the reverse is true of the alloy: 14K contains 41.67% other metal against 18K's 25%, which is 67% more alloy. That is where 14K's hardness comes from.
Value per gram
At a spot price of $4,060 per troy ounce, a gram of pure gold is $130.53. A gram of 18K therefore contains $97.90 of gold, and a gram of 14K contains $76.14. The 18K gram is worth 28.6% more as metal. On a 6 gram wedding band, that is $587 of gold in 18K against $457 in 14K - a $130 difference in metal content. Retail prices usually differ by more than that, because higher-karat work carries a higher labour and margin component too. One caveat on scrap: because refiners prefer higher-karat material, 18K often also earns a slightly better payout percentage than 14K, which widens the gap a little further on resale. But the difference in percentage is small relative to the difference in content.
Durability and daily wear
On Vickers hardness, 14K yellow typically lands around 130-150 HV and 18K yellow around 120-135 HV, depending on the specific alloy and whether the piece is cast or worked. 14K is meaningfully harder and more scratch-resistant. For daily-wear rings this matters more than most buyers expect. A ring on a working hand takes constant abrasion, and 18K will show wear, dents and rounded-over detail faster. Prong settings in 14K hold stones more securely over years, and 14K resists bending that loosens a stone. Where 18K holds up fine: earrings, pendants, necklaces, occasional-wear pieces, and anything that does not get knocked. The wear argument is specifically about rings and bracelets. One nuance: harder is not the same as tougher. 14K is more prone to cracking under a sharp impact while 18K bends, and bent is usually easier for a jeweler to repair than cracked. In practice, for the wear patterns most people generate, 14K lasts better on hands.
Colour and appearance
18K yellow gold has a noticeably deeper, warmer, more saturated yellow because there is simply more gold in it. Side by side, the difference is visible; alone, most people would not identify which they were looking at. In white gold the relationship flips in a useful way. 14K white starts whiter because there is more white alloy in it, so when the rhodium plating wears - and it always does, typically in one to three years on a ring - 14K white shows less yellow underneath. 18K white needs replating more visibly. In rose gold, 14K can actually give a stronger pink, because the copper that creates the colour is a larger share of the alloy. If you want a pronounced rose, 14K is often the better choice.
Skin sensitivity
Gold itself is biologically inert and essentially never causes a reaction. Contact allergies to "gold" jewelry are almost always reactions to nickel in the alloy, and less often to copper. Because 18K contains 25% alloy against 14K's 41.67%, an 18K piece carries less of whatever the irritant is - so 18K is generally the safer choice for sensitive skin, and 22K safer still. The more targeted solution is to specify the alloy rather than just the karat. Nickel-free 14K exists, and palladium white gold avoids nickel entirely at either karat. If you know you react to costume jewelry, ask specifically whether the white gold is nickel or palladium based - that matters far more than the karat number.
How to decide
Choose 14K for engagement and wedding rings worn daily, especially on active hands; for anything with prong-set stones you want to keep; for rose gold where you want a strong colour; for white gold where you want to delay visible replating; and when budget matters and you want more piece for the money. Choose 18K for pieces that do not take abrasion - earrings, pendants, chains, occasional-wear rings; when you want the richest yellow; when skin sensitivity is a concern; when you want maximum gold content per gram held as value; and when you are buying into a market where 18K is the expected standard, which is most of Europe and most luxury brands. And for context on the whole debate: karat is a smaller driver of what a piece is worth on resale than brand, condition and design. An 18K stamp on an unbranded hollow chain will not hold value the way a 14K piece from a recognised maker does. If resale is the goal, buy bullion for metal value and brand for jewelry value - the karat argument is mostly about how the piece will look and last while you own it.
