14K Gold Calculator
Estimate 14K (585) gold value — the most common jewelry karat in the United States — by gram, pennyweight, or ounce with live prices.
Fineness
14K is 583–585 fine: about 58.3% pure gold. Both 583 and 585 stamps mean 14K.
Common forms
The default karat for US chains, rings, bracelets, earrings, and class jewelry.
Why it dominates
Harder and cheaper than 18K while keeping a warm gold color — the practical everyday alloy.
How to calculate 14K gold value
Look for a 14K, 585, or 583 stamp; US pieces are often marked 14K with a maker’s mark. Weigh the item in grams or pennyweight (US buyers frequently quote per dwt). Select 14K purity so the calculator applies the 58.3% fine-gold ratio. Use the payout selector to preview realistic offers — most 14K scrap trades at 70–90% of melt.
A worked 14K example
A 15 gram 14K chain at a $3,400 spot price: 15 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.4823 troy ounces, × 0.583 = 0.2812 ounces of fine gold, × $3,400 = about $956. If a buyer quotes per pennyweight, divide their per-dwt offer by 1.5552 to get a per-gram rate you can compare directly.
585 vs 583: same karat, different rounding
14 parts out of 24 is 58.333…%. European makers round up and stamp 585; older American convention rounded down to 583. Some US alloys are made very slightly rich ("14K plumb", stamped 14KP) to guarantee the full 58.33%. All of these are the same karat for valuation purposes.
Is 14K worth selling as scrap?
Yes — 14K makes up the bulk of the US scrap gold market, and at over half fine gold by weight, even small pieces add up. A broken 20 gram 14K bracelet contains about 11.7 grams of pure gold. Sort 14K separately from 10K and 18K so a buyer cannot average your whole lot at the lowest karat.
How much of a 14K item is actually gold?
About 58.3%. A 10 gram 14K ring contains roughly 5.83 grams of pure gold; the rest is copper, silver, zinc, or nickel.
What is the difference between 14K and 14KP?
14KP means "14 karat plumb" — guaranteed at least the full 58.33% purity. It is a quality assurance mark, not a different karat.
Why do pawn shops quote 14K per pennyweight?
Pennyweight (dwt) is a traditional US jewelers’ unit: 1 dwt = 1.5552 grams. Quoting per dwt can make an offer sound larger, so always convert to per-gram before comparing.
