10K Gold Calculator

Estimate 10K (417) gold value — the US minimum karat, common in class rings, budget chains, and everyday jewelry — with live prices.

Fineness

10K is 417 fine: about 41.7% pure gold, the minimum that can legally be sold as "gold" in the US.

Common forms

Class rings, budget chains, men’s rings, and much mall-store jewelry.

Durability

The hardest common karat — it wears well, which is why heavy everyday pieces are often 10K.

How to calculate 10K gold value

Confirm the 10K or 417 stamp; unmarked heavy pieces should be tested before valuing. Weigh the item — heavy 10K pieces like class rings often weigh 8–20 grams. Select 10K purity so the calculator applies the 41.7% fine-gold ratio. Compare payout percentages: 10K is routinely bought, but per-gram offers are the lowest of the common karats.

A worked 10K example

A 20 gram 10K class ring at a $3,400 spot price: 20 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.6430 troy ounces, × 0.417 = 0.2681 ounces of fine gold, × $3,400 = about $912 — before any deduction for the stone. Class ring stones are usually synthetic and add nothing, so expect offers based on the gold weight minus the stone.

Is 10K real gold?

Yes. 10K is genuine gold alloy — 10 parts gold to 14 parts other metals — and every legitimate buyer purchases it. It is the legal minimum to be marketed as gold in the United States; the UK allows 9K (375) and Germany 8K (333), which is why imported jewelry sometimes carries those lower marks.

Weight can beat karat

Because 10K jewelry tends to be chunky, a heavy 10K piece often contains more fine gold than a delicate 18K one. A 25 gram 10K chain holds about 10.4 grams of pure gold — more than a 12 gram 18K chain’s 9 grams. Always compare fine-gold content, not karat alone.

Is 10K gold worth anything?

Definitely. At 41.7% purity, a typical 10 gram 10K item contains about 4.2 grams of pure gold. Buyers purchase 10K every day; the per-gram rate is simply proportional to the purity.

Do buyers pay for class ring stones?

Almost never — most class ring stones are synthetic spinel or glass. Offers are based on the gold weight with the stone weight estimated and deducted.

What is below 10K?

The US does not allow items under 10K to be sold as gold, but imports may be 9K (375, UK) or 8K (333, Germany). This calculator supports both if your piece carries those marks.
