Compare a gold buyer’s offer

Calculate your gold above, then enter the net amount a buyer would pay after fees. We compare it with the full melt value, before the payout percentage you selected.

Enter a valid weight and price above to compare an offer.

A percentage alone does not establish a fair price. Compare tested purity, net weight, fees and competing written quotes. Brand, stones and collectible value can justify a price above melt.

Gold Calculator Australia

AUD price basis

The international USD gold quote is multiplied by the USD-to-AUD exchange rate before your weight and purity are applied.

Carat and hallmark

9ct is 37.5% gold, 18ct is 75%, and 22ct is about 91.67%. A mark such as 375 or 750 describes fineness in parts per thousand.

Jewellery and bullion

A jewellery estimate uses net metal weight and purity. A bullion coin may instead specify the fine-gold weight directly.

How to calculate gold value in Australia

  1. 1Keep AUD selected and confirm whether the displayed price is live, cached or a published reference.
  2. 2Weigh your item in grams and account separately for gemstones and non-gold components.
  3. 3Select its tested carat. Use multiple-item mode to keep different carats separate in a scrap lot.
  4. 4Enter a buyer’s net offer below the calculator to compare its percentage of the full melt estimate.

To put this into practice, use Gold Price Per Gram, check the assumptions with 9K Gold Price & Calculator, and compare the result in 18K Gold Calculator.

How the Australian-dollar estimate works

Gold is commonly quoted internationally in US dollars per troy ounce. This tool converts that quote to Australian dollars, divides by 31.1034768 to obtain the fine-gold gram rate, and applies the purity of your item. Changes in either the USD gold price or the exchange rate can therefore change an AUD estimate.

For a worked example without a fixed market price, 10 grams of 9ct gold contains 10 × 9 ÷ 24 = 3.75 grams of fine gold. Its metal estimate is 3.75 multiplied by the pure-gold AUD gram rate. A 10 gram 18ct item contains 7.5 grams of fine gold, so it has twice the metal value under the same price assumptions.

Checking 9ct, 14ct and 18ct jewellery

Read the carat or fineness mark and weigh the item before asking for a quote. For 14ct, the nominal karat calculation is 14 ÷ 24, or about 58.33%; a literal 585 fineness mark means 58.5%. This calculator uses nominal karat ratios, so use a tested fineness or a buyer’s assay when an exact settlement amount matters.

A ring or necklace can contain stones, steel springs, solder and replacement parts. Gross weight does not establish recoverable gold weight. Ask the buyer to show which weight they are using and how deductions were measured. A hallmark is a starting point for identification and does not authenticate the entire object on its own.

Comparing a scrap quote with a bullion buyback

Melt value is a benchmark for metal content. A buyer’s net payment also depends on testing, refining, handling and margin. The Perth Mint publishes distinct buying and selling figures; check which side of any rate applies before comparing it with a quote. This calculator does not reproduce the Mint’s buyback prices or promise that a buyer will match international spot.

For a recognised bullion coin, check its published fine-gold weight. A coin marked as containing one troy ounce of fine gold already includes the purity adjustment in that specification. For collectible coins or signed jewellery, obtain an intact resale assessment as well as a metal estimate. Compare written offers on the same weight, purity and currency basis, with all fees included.

Common questions

How much is 9ct gold worth per gram in Australia?

Multiply the pure-gold AUD price per gram by 0.375. The calculator uses that ratio for 9ct and updates the estimate when market data loads.

Does the calculator use Australian dollars?

Yes. This page starts in AUD. You can switch to another supported currency or enter a manual spot price per troy ounce in your selected currency.

Is this the price an Australian gold buyer will pay?

No. It is a spot-based metal estimate. Enter the buyer’s net offer to compare it with melt value, then confirm tested purity, payable weight and fees.

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams; a regular ounce is 28.349523125 grams. Use the unit printed on the scale or bullion specification.
