Fineness

10K is 417 fine: about 41.7% pure gold. It was the FTC’s historic US threshold until the Jewelry Guides changed in 2018.

Common forms

Class rings, budget chains, men’s rings, and much mall-store jewelry.

Durability

The hardest common karat — it wears well, which is why heavy everyday pieces are often 10K.

How to calculate 10K gold value

  1. 1Confirm the 10K or 417 stamp; unmarked heavy pieces should be tested before valuing.
  2. 2Weigh the item — heavy 10K pieces like class rings often weigh 8–20 grams.
  3. 3Select 10K purity so the calculator applies the 41.7% fine-gold ratio.
  4. 4Compare payout percentages: 10K is routinely bought, but per-gram offers are the lowest of the common karats.

To put this into practice, use Gold Karat Calculator, check the assumptions with Gold Price Per Gram, and compare the result in 10K vs 14K vs 18K vs 22K vs 24K Gold Value.

A worked 10K example

A 20 gram 10K class ring at a $4,060 spot price: 20 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.6430 troy ounces, × 0.4167 = 0.2679 ounces of fine gold, × $4,060 = about $1,088 — before any deduction for the stone. Class ring stones are usually synthetic and add nothing, so expect offers based on the gold weight minus the stone.

Is 10K real gold?

Yes. 10K is genuine gold alloy — 10 parts gold to 14 parts other metals — and buyers routinely purchase it. The FTC removed its former 10K threshold in 2018; lower-fineness products still require accurate, non-deceptive disclosure.

Weight can beat karat

Because 10K jewelry tends to be chunky, a heavy 10K piece often contains more fine gold than a delicate 18K one. A 25 gram 10K chain holds about 10.4 grams of pure gold — more than a 12 gram 18K chain’s 9 grams. Always compare fine-gold content, not karat alone.

Common questions

Is 10K gold worth anything?

Definitely. At 41.7% purity, a typical 10 gram 10K item contains about 4.2 grams of pure gold. Buyers purchase 10K every day; the per-gram rate is simply proportional to the purity.

Do buyers pay for class ring stones?

Almost never — most class ring stones are synthetic spinel or glass. Offers are based on the gold weight with the stone weight estimated and deducted.

What is below 10K?

9K (375) and 8K (333) are recognized in several markets. The FTC removed its former US 10K threshold in 2018, but fineness claims must still be truthful and clear.
