A worked 22K example
A 10 gram 22K bangle at a $4,060 spot price: 10 ÷ 31.1035 = 0.3215 troy ounces, × 0.9167 = 0.2947 ounces of fine gold, × $4,060 = about $1,197. Note that jewelers selling new 22K jewelry add making charges on top of metal value, but buyers of used jewelry pay on metal content only.
Why coins like the Gold Eagle are 22K
The US Mint alloys Gold Eagles to 22K (crown gold) so the coins resist scratches and dents in handling. Each 1 oz Eagle still contains a full troy ounce of fine gold — the alloy metals are added on top, which is why an Eagle weighs 33.93 grams, not 31.1.
