The formula
Melt value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768. 24K uses 0.999 because commercially pure gold is 999 fine.

A percentage alone does not establish a fair price. Compare tested purity, net weight, fees and competing written quotes. Brand, stones and collectible value can justify a price above melt.

Melt value is the market value of the gold content only. It is not an offer, an appraisal or investment advice; buyers pay a percentage of melt that varies by business model.

Melt value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768. 24K uses 0.999 because commercially pure gold is 999 fine.
Each figure is melt value: the market value of the gold content alone. It is not a buyer’s offer and leaves out gemstones, craftsmanship and brand.
Use the net metal weight. Stones, steel clasp springs and solder add weight but no gold, so remove them from the figure or ask the buyer how they were deducted.
To put this into practice, use Gold Value Calculator, check the assumptions with Gold Price Per Gram, and compare the result in 14K Gold Calculator.
Each row is a weight and each column is a karat. Where a row meets a column you get the melt value of that much gold at the reference spot price printed under the chart. The chart covers the weights people most often look up, from half a gram to one kilogram, plus one pennyweight, one tola and one troy ounce.
Values scale in a straight line with weight, so you can combine rows. Two grams are worth twice one gram, and 1.8 grams are worth 1.8 times the one-gram figure in the same column. The karat columns scale the same way: 18K contains 75% gold and 14K about 58.33%, so an 18K item is worth about 29% more than a 14K item of the same weight. For an exact figure, type the weight into the calculator instead of adding rows by hand.
A 1.8 gram 14K chain contains 1.8 × 14 ÷ 24 = 1.05 grams of fine gold. Dividing by 31.1034768 gives 0.0338 troy ounces, and multiplying that by the spot price per troy ounce gives the melt value. The same steps work for any weight and karat; the calculator performs them with full precision and shows the fine-gold weight it used.
A kilogram of 10K gold contains 1,000 × 10 ÷ 24 = 416.67 grams of fine gold, or 13.396 troy ounces. A kilogram of 24K bullion at 999 fineness contains 32.119 troy ounces of fine gold. Large lots are normally assayed before payment, so the tested fineness of a kilogram of scrap can differ from its stamp, and that difference changes the final figure.
A gold buyer pays a percentage of melt value, not the full amount. The gap covers testing, refining, handling and the buyer’s margin, and it differs between refiners, jewellers, pawn shops and mail-in services. A buyer’s quote can also be lower if the scale reading, deductions for stones or the tested purity differ from yours.
Treat the chart as the ceiling for metal value and compare offers against it. Ask every buyer for a written net offer on the same weight and karat, with all fees included, then enter it in the calculator to see what percentage of melt each one pays. Jewellery with a maker’s signature, notable gemstones or antique value may be worth more intact than as scrap, so get it valued as jewellery before selling it by weight.
Gold is weighed in several units. One pennyweight (dwt) is 1.55517384 grams and is common at US jewellers. One tola is 11.6638 grams on this site and is used in South Asia and the Gulf. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, and spot prices are quoted per troy ounce. A kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces.
A kitchen or postal scale that reads in ordinary ounces uses 28.349523125 grams per ounce, about 8.85% less than a troy ounce. Reading an ordinary-ounce figure as troy ounces overstates the gold by almost 10%, so convert to grams first when the unit is unclear. The gold weight converter shows every unit side by side.
We use primary or official references for measurement, purity, hallmark, and coin specifications. Market prices remain time-sensitive and are timestamped separately.
One gram of 24K gold is worth the spot price per troy ounce × 0.999 ÷ 31.1034768. The 1 g row of the chart shows that figure and the same gram in lower karats.
14K gold is 14/24, or about 58.33% gold, so one gram contains 0.583 grams of fine gold. Its melt value is in the 14K column of the 1 g row.
A kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces. A 999 fine kilo bar contains 32.119 troy ounces of fine gold, so its melt value is that figure times the spot price; the 1 kg row shows it by karat.
No. The chart shows melt value, the most the metal is worth. Buyers pay a percentage of it after testing, refining costs and margin. Compare written net offers against the chart.
News prices are per troy ounce of pure gold. Jewellery is usually 9K to 18K, so it contains less gold, and it is weighed in grams or pennyweights rather than troy ounces.
