Purity

9K (9ct) gold is 37.5% fine gold and uses the recognized 375 fineness mark in the United Kingdom.

Common market

It is a familiar jewelry standard in the UK and other markets that use British-style carat descriptions.

Valuation

A 9K item’s metal value is 0.375 of the pure-gold value for the same net weight.

How to calculate 9K or 9ct gold value

  1. 1Look for 9K, 9ct, or a complete UK hallmark containing the 375 fineness mark.
  2. 2Weigh the gold item accurately; deduct stones, watch movements, springs, and other non-gold parts.
  3. 3Select 9K so the calculator multiplies the fine-gold price by 0.375.
  4. 4Compare the melt estimate with resale value before scrapping branded, antique, or intact jewelry.

To put this into practice, use Gold Karat Calculator, check the assumptions with Gold Price Per Gram, and compare the result in 10K Gold Calculator.

What the 375 hallmark confirms

The UK government’s hallmarking guidance identifies 375 as the fineness mark for 9 carat gold: at least 375 parts gold per thousand. For gold articles over the UK exemption weight, a proper hallmark also includes a sponsor or maker mark and an Assay Office mark.

A standalone 375 stamp on an imported or underweight item is not the same evidence as a complete independently applied UK hallmark. It still tells you the claimed purity, but professional testing is sensible before a high-value sale.

9K price per gram formula

Start with the pure-gold price per gram, which is the troy-ounce spot price divided by 31.1034768. Multiply by 0.375 for the theoretical 9K melt value per gram. Then multiply by the net gold weight.

Do not divide a troy-ounce price by the 28.3495 grams in a kitchen ounce. That mistake overstates every result. The calculator performs the troy conversion and keeps the working precision behind the displayed rounded amount.

When 9K jewelry can be worth more than melt

Melt value is a metal floor, not a universal resale price. A signed maker, period design, complete set, wearable condition, or valuable stones can make a piece more desirable intact. Check comparable second-hand sales before allowing a buyer to destroy it for refining.

For true scrap, obtain itemized quotes using the same weight and purity. A buyer should be able to explain any difference between the calculated melt value and the amount offered.

Common questions

Are 9K, 9ct, and 375 the same?

Yes. They are three common ways to describe gold that is 37.5% fine by weight.

Is 9K real gold?

Yes. It is a gold alloy. Its fine-gold share is lower than 10K, 14K, or 18K, so its melt value per gram is proportionally lower.

Does every 375 mark guarantee a UK hallmark?

No. A complete UK hallmark contains additional compulsory marks. If provenance or value is uncertain, arrange a professional test.
