Purity

8K is one third gold by the karat formula: 8 ÷ 24 = 0.3333, commonly expressed as 333 fineness.

Appearance

Its higher alloy-metal share can make it paler, harder, and more prone to tarnish than higher-karat gold.

US descriptions

The FTC removed the former 10K threshold in 2018; lower-karat gold still requires clear, non-deceptive fineness disclosure.

How to calculate 8K or 333 gold value

  1. 1Identify an 8K or 333 purity claim and separate it from marks that mean plated, filled, or bonded gold.
  2. 2Weigh the net metal content, excluding stones and components that are not part of the gold alloy.
  3. 3Select 8K so the calculator applies the 0.333 fine-gold ratio to the current or manual spot price.
  4. 4Use professional XRF or assay testing when a stamp is doubtful or the lot is large enough for a small purity error to matter.

To put this into practice, use Gold Karat Calculator, check the assumptions with Gold Price Per Gram, and compare the result in 9K Gold Price & Calculator.

What 333 gold means

A 333 stamp claims 333 parts gold per thousand, or roughly 8 karat. The remainder can include copper, silver, zinc, or other alloy metals that change hardness and color. Those metals generally do not receive a gold-price valuation in an ordinary scrap quote.

Do not confuse 333 solid gold with gold-plated marks. Plated items contain a thin surface layer over another metal and cannot be valued by multiplying their full weight by 0.333.

The 8K gram-price calculation

Pure-gold price per gram equals the troy-ounce spot price divided by 31.1034768. Multiply by 0.333 for a practical 333-gold estimate. For a 15 gram item, the nominal fine-gold content is about 4.995 grams before non-gold component deductions.

The live panel keeps spot price and currency conversion separate from purity. This makes it possible to audit the result instead of trusting a single unexplained number.

Why old “10K minimum in the US” advice is outdated

The Federal Trade Commission eliminated its former 10-karat threshold in the 2018 Jewelry Guides revisions. That did not make vague marketing acceptable: the gold content must still be represented truthfully and clearly so a buyer is not misled about the product.

Local hallmarking, consumer, and sales rules can differ by country. This calculator estimates metal content; it does not decide whether a particular label or sale complies with the law where you live.

Common questions

Is 333 gold the same as 8K?

Approximately. 8/24 is 33.333%, which is commonly marked as 333 parts per thousand.

Can 8K be sold as gold in the United States?

The FTC removed its former 10K threshold in 2018, but sellers still must make accurate, non-deceptive disclosures and comply with applicable law.

Why can an 8K offer be much lower than a 14K offer?

At equal weight, 8K contains about 33.3% fine gold while 14K contains about 58.3%. Testing and buyer deductions can widen the difference.
