Gold Price Per Gram: What It Means

Understand how the per-gram number is calculated, why purity matters, and how to compare it with buyer quotes.

How price per gram is calculated

Gold is usually quoted per troy ounce, not per regular ounce. To estimate the 24K gold price per gram, divide the troy-ounce price by 31.1035. For jewelry, the calculator then adjusts that number by karat purity. For example, 14K gold contains about 58.3% fine gold, so the melt-value estimate is lower than a 24K gram.

Why the number changes

Gold spot prices move during market hours, and currency changes can also affect your displayed value. A manual price field is useful when you want to calculate from a local quote or a buyer price. For the cleanest comparison, use the same price source, same currency, and same unit across every item.

How to use it wisely

Treat gold price per gram as a starting estimate, not a guaranteed payout. Dealers may deduct refining, testing, shipping, resale risk, and business margin. If you are selling, compare more than one quote and ask whether the offer is based on gross weight or fine-gold weight.

Key points

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. 24K is closest to pure gold; 18K, 14K, and 10K contain less fine gold. Buyer offers can be below spot value.
