Gold Price Per Tola: Weight, Purity and Conversion Guide

The modern standard tola is approximately 11.6638 grams. It is also exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce under the commonly used conversion, so one troy ounce contains about 2.6667 tolas.

The word has deep regional history, but a calculator needs one consistent conversion. Confirm that a local dealer uses the same standard, especially when comparing older coins, traditional units or handwritten quotes.

Do not confuse a tola with an avoirdupois ounce. A regular ounce is about 28.3495 grams, a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, and a tola is 11.6638 grams.

If you know the pure gold price per gram, multiply it by 11.6638 for the 24K price per tola. If you know the troy-ounce price, multiply by 0.375. Both routes should produce almost the same answer apart from rounding.

Then apply purity. Multiply the 24K tola value by 0.9167 for 22K, 0.875 for 21K, 0.75 for 18K or the tested fineness of the item. The calculator applies this sequence automatically.

Use the currency selector before comparing local quotes. Exchange rates and regional premiums mean a number copied from another country may not match a local market even at the same global spot price.

A full tola describes gross weight, not fine-gold weight. One tola of 24K contains nearly one full tola of gold. One tola of 22K contains about 10.69 grams of fine gold, while one tola of 18K contains about 8.75 grams.

That difference explains why two pieces with identical tola weight can have very different melt values. Always record both gross weight and purity rather than treating “one tola” as a complete price description.

Coins and bars may also carry fabrication premiums. Their retail or resale price can sit above melt value when the product is recognisable, accurately assayed and in good condition.

A shop’s price for a tola of finished jewelry may include making charges, design labour, retailer margin, taxes and sometimes a wastage allowance. Those costs are real at purchase but usually are not recovered as metal value when the piece is sold.

Ask a retailer to separate the metal price, making charge and tax on the invoice. That makes different designs easier to compare and gives you a clear record of the stated purity and weight.

When selling, calculate the metal baseline first, then compare the buyer’s net offer. Do not compare a new retail price with a scrap offer as if both describe the same product.

Confirm the date, currency, spot source, tola conversion, purity and whether the quote is per gross or fine-gold weight. Small differences in any one field can create a large difference across a multi-tola purchase.

Use a manual spot price when you need to reproduce a jeweler’s written quote. Save the result or export the items so every comparison uses the same inputs.
